2-day Symposium & Workshop
In recent years, people all over the world have been facing the difficulties in maintaining ‘ordinary’ and peaceful lives in cities. Terrorism, natural disasters, tremendous amount of migration, and other unpredictable issues in cities do not allow us any clues to foresee the future form of the architecture or city. Instead of planning for the city 30 years into the future, we have to be prepared to adapt to what is happening in front of us at this very moment, and react to the reality spontaneously. We cannot give up trying to improve our future, and yet, we have to accept drastic changes of the situation at hand.
Whereas we have to adapt to the unpredictable issues, we also have to ask ourselves: what constitutes our happiness in life; what kind of life goals we would like to pursue; and, how to make them happen. Now, we are facing the time in history wherein people are starting to express their hope explicitly as well. Through the Internet, or directly through elections for leaders, we express
our ideas for our better lives, which affect rising global tendencies. In the time of this indeterminate period of the century, we want to have a clear direction about our own daily lives. We have to be honest to ourselves, to our family and to our community, hopefully with empathy to the importance of individual life of the people and its community.
One of the ideas to define architecture and city would be categorized with environmental, social and economic aspects shown in the diagram below.
Growth of the city, redevelopment, revitalization and economic effect are to be discussed in the field of ‘Economy.’ Especially in the case of Tokyo, the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan will bring big impact on the daily lives and future plans for people.
Energy, ecology and technology are in the field of ‘Environment’ which effects and change our lives, spatially and physically.
Recovery from disastrous situation or effects of migrants in EU cities will be discussed in the field of ‘Social’ aspect. Political influence to the specific community affects their lives in cities
It is said that when these 3 fields are well combined and balanced, these can make a sustainable city in general.
Yes, we were able to imagine a sustainable society of the tomorrow; that is, until yesterday. However, from today and onward, it has become imperative for us to pursue our hopes and desires ourselves, our sensuousness based on our honest feeling, critical and speculative way of seeing the world to make architecture and city our own place.
Architecture and cities, are they maintained or created as our own place to match our own ego? Or are they the place to be empathetic toward others? These questions can be discussed in the different urban situations of the two different continents, Japan and EU. This conference, ‘Beyond Sustainable Architecture and Smart City: Rehumanization of Urban Spaces’ will examine the possible directions to our common future of architecture and city to have better life and happiness based on new and holistic approaches to the notion of well-being. Exchanged and shared ideas between the two areas are expected to give us clues to find a solution of the common problems.
Sessions are planned to be held under the following themes:
Redefining various value systems that produce and consume growth, developments, and culture.
Re-associating our relationship to the Environment, through considering the meaning of engendered energy-forms, ecological equilibrium, and technological progress.
Reacting to changes in human life-pattern caused by unpredictable and uncontrollable externalities, such as migration, natural disasters, and terrorism acts.
